What is coaching?

Coaching is when someone will support the development of a business or individual towards a series of goals. Depending on what is needed and the people involved, they will use a series of methods or processes to help achieve those goals.

A great coach will adjust the way in which they work based on the situation. For example, they might need to be an Instructor or Educator if someone doesn’t know something. You might see sports coaches instructing their teams or individuals quite a lot, this happens in the work place to. This is a more dated way of thinking when trying to support individuals and businesses. Engaging individuals and businesses in their development can be more successful in the long term when coaching dynamically and in a customer/learner centred fashion.

We feel the main roles used by a coach are: Mentor, Instructor, Teacher, Facilitator, Challenger, Listener Reflective Practioner.

So the question of “what is coaching?” is not the easiest question to truly and accurately answer.

What type of Coach do I need?

There are many coaches who have a niche; for example a golf coach, a football coach, a singing coach, a business coach, a life coach. The one thing that is consistent across the range is that they are likely to have an area of specialism – golf, football, business and so on. Whilst we offer various forms of coaching, including business coaching and life coaching, we believe that a holistic view is the best way of coaching.

So if we are asked to do some life coaching, we know that the clients performance is influenced by what’s happening in their working life and also their health. Conversely, if someone is looking business coaching, some consideration should be given to health and home life.  They all interweave so perhaps a holistic view on things is the most effective way to coach – Performance Coaching.

Do you do Life Coaching or Business Coaching?

Yes.
Having successfully run businesses and worked with individuals to help them towards their personal goals, we have the skills and knowledge to do both.

I’ve heard about Transformational coaching, what is it?

In every format of coach, we the coaches should be helping the individuals or businesses make some form of transformation in to new place. Therefore in successful coaching there is always some form of transformation.
Some coaches will say they specialise in transformational coaching – therefore: working with a coach to make meaningful and lasting changes in areas like health, career, relationships, finances, and emotional well-being. These tyoes of coach are likely to be working with individuals who want to make a fairly large change in their lives. So they are also doing life coaching.

What is your niche?

Whilst My Performance Coach do not have a niche (e.g. Business Coach) we would say that we focus on the Performance of this individual to help them get where they want to get to. Replace the word “individual” with “business” and you still focus on the performance. The main difference is that we are trying to influence the factors that will make a difference.

What does a coaching session look like?

Whilst we don’t know how all other coaches work, we would first have a conversation to see if we are a fit for each other. This would likely be a conversation about where the customer is trying to get to, what their motivations are, their experiences of being coached before.
If both are in agreement a separate conversation and discussion would start to detail where the customer is trying to get to (goal setting), where they are currently, what they can do about it with some contributions from the coach if apprpriate. Next would be deciding what to do and creating a plan of action. Depending on what the goal is, this could be a long term aim (competing in the Olympic Games like one customer). It could also be about trying to create better eating habits – this could take between weeks and months. So interim goals or milestones can be agreed and worked on. Finally there’s the agreement to the partnership. Agreeing what support the customer would like to help them on the journey. A weekly check in is hugely popular along with formal reviews every month to then replan and continue on the next leg of the journey.

What is a Coach Developer and what does a Coach Developer do?

A new phrase coming into sport and business, is Coach Developer. This role is undertaken by a coach working with another coach, to help them get better at coaching. It tends to be very powerful and gives the coachee the opportunity of driving their own development from a position of safety – not feeling threatened by another coach.
